KINE-P443: InShape

Summary

The InShape course gives students their first real experience working with an actual client. For nine weeks, we meet with our client twice a week and help them work toward their goals through coaching, assessments, and individualized workouts. The class focuses on learning how to screen clients for risk factors, perform fitness assessments, understand the results, and build safe and effective exercise programs. It also introduces basics of nutrition, behavior change, and what it means to act professionally in a fitness or clinical setting.

Reflection

InShape helped me put everything I’ve learned in classes into real practice. Working one-on-one with a client taught me how important communication and patience really are. I was able to take the assessments we learned and use them to create a program that fit my client’s goals and abilities. Meeting regularly helped me get better at cueing exercises, adjusting workouts when needed, and keeping my client motivated. It also showed me what it feels like to be responsible for someone else’s progress, which is something I’ll be very familiar with in my future career.

Overall, this course made me more confident in my ability to train and support someone, and it confirmed why I’m going into the exercise science and pre-PT field. It was a good first step into the real-world side of this career.
